The compaq is definitely better because compaq is now owned by HP and HP makes some of the best computer on the maket. Hp has surpassed even Dell in sales in recent years(i don't know who is on top now). The compaq has a bigger screen, more ram (very very important), a bigger harddrive, and the last thing is the operatin system. It is hard to find good games for linux. For college you would want a windows based computer or a mac based computer(mac cost more than windows based computers but they are more reliable). 512mb to 1gb of ram is significant, it is very important for multitasking and other things such as watching movie and such. The benq does have a better processor though in my opinion. Intels tend to last longer than AMD's but in the overall deal the compaq is much better. unless you are willing to upgrade the ram on the benq. then the benq will be much better. If you are not limited to compaq and benq then i suggest checking out the new inspiron line from dell. they are cheap and can be configured from a simple machine to a very highend machine.
